Digitalisation of the València Tourist Card
The València Tourist Card is the city's physical tourist card that includes unlimited travel on the bus, metro and tram, entry to all the city's museums and monuments and special discounts at the main tourist attractions in Valencia.
As part of the València City Council's Smart City project, Visit València has participated in the red.es project, whose main objective is to "digitalise the city's tourist card (València Tourist Card) and its uses.” In this way, it is possible to identify the behaviour of tourists in the city and to improve the content and the range of services included in the València Tourist Card based on their tastes and preferences.
The project is being carried out in two phases:
PHASE 1: Digitalising card sales and tourist movements with the card.
We have developed the necessary technology to improve the tourist experience in purchasing and picking up the València Tourist Card and to know the use visitors make of, and the routes they take, with the card around the city of València.
This technology includes the following systems:
Four smart points (digital kiosks) for purchasing, picking up and topping up the València Tourist Card.
There are four points where the València Tourist Card can be purchased, picked up if already bought online, and topped up. They operate continuously in the tourist offices at the airport and the Joaquín Sorolla train station. The other smart points operate during office opening hours and help to reduce waiting times and improve the tourist experience. These kiosks allow tourists themselves to plan details of their visit in their countries of origin and those who already have the card can top it up with a 10% discount.
Tourists who are already here and who wish to extend their stay can also top up their card with the same discount and even recycle the card by depositing it in the boxes located in our tourist offices.
By reusing or recycling the card, they contribute to reducing the emission of plastics and polluting components used in its production.
Forty-two smart readers of the València Tourist Card in museums and monuments around the city
We have installed 42 València Tourist Card readers in all the city's museums and tourist attractions, such as the Oceanogràfic, the Palau de les Arts and the Science Museum.
These readers work in a very simple way: the card is held close to the reader, and the screen indicates that it has been activated, whether it has expired or not, whether it has already been used or not... so that any discount or free admission the holder is entitled to can be applied.
The readers have a computer system for the configuration and reading of statistical data that records all the data on the use of each of the cards: trips on public transport, museum and monument admissions, etc. Thanks to this anonymous data, we can extract patterns of tourist behaviour and thus improve the card and the tourist's experience in the city.

PHASE 2: Digitalisation of the card support medium
During 2022 the physical card will become a digital card that will allow us to access the bus, metro and tram and all the museums and monuments by means of a code, without having to pick it up at our offices or smart points, as we will be able to have it directly on our mobiles.
With the digitalisation of the card, we eliminate paper, plastic and chips, making the card more sustainable and contributing to the reduction of our carbon footprint to make smart and sustainable tourism.
